Dear teachers…..lets just stop it now. Let’s just stop the hype. Let’s just stop buying into a Hallmark Holiday and NOT DO VALENTINES!!!
I have two children in elementary school.
I received TWO class lists for ‘Card Exchanges’ for both.
That is FORTY FOUR cards.
FORTY FOUR either handmade, printed from the ‘net, or bought at the loonie store cards. Either way..it is a WASTE OF TIME AND PAPER.
My children will return from school with a bag of these crappy cards, which I will promptly throw away.
This is MORE annoying when not only is my kids school closed on Valentines Day, BUT the Friday before. THEY ARE NOT THERE FOR THE STUPID DAY.
Today I am faced with two kids whining about food they have to bring to their class parties. Told by my kids because my school is cutting back due to budget restraints and we don’t get WRITTEN notices about things from the teacher….instead we have to decipher their writing in their agendas or what they are telling me.
Let’s look at this again….while my school is trying to SAVE money…they want me to SPEND money on food and paper.
This is stupid and annoying.
I THOUGHT I could kill two birds with one stone and bake cupcakes for their classes instead of the cards and party food…but NOOOO because they are not having their parties on the last day of school this week…..one party is tomorrow!!
By all that is holy teachers…..can you THINK about the parents just for once….can we STOP even acknowledging this fake holiday???
I am sure many many many other parents would agree with this sentiment.

Seriously, it’s one thing do celebrate it on the day but let’s give it a rest if school is closed or its a weekend! Gonestly!

I don’t mind them doing something small on the actual day but this seems a bit ridiculous. The whole thing seems kind of stupid what with the no written notices, the parties, the food. Um, WTH, this is school right? When is the school part happening?

Agree! I have two in elementary school, one who whines about every card she has to write and another who can’t write her own cards. Not to mention that one is in Brownies – there’s another eight cards and treats. Plus, our school is doing candy grams and fundraising for a dance a thon this week. I’ve shelled out $35 this week on Valentines and fund raising alone! And they have the nerve to send home a Subway lunch order form – another $7.50 for a sub, drink and cookie. Stop the insanity. lol

I’m throwing my support behind you – you should run for the School Board on this platform.
As if the cards are not enough hassle, do your kids insist on taping treats to their cards, as do most other children in our school? Oh, the parental pressure – please, make it stop!

I am dreading this…DREADING it. I love what V’s Montessori preschool does. They dress in Red and bring some cut up fruit for a salad. No cards, no candy. Oh and the Friday before they can bring in $3 for a Variety heart pin. Now THAT is how you show some love! Give to charity dammit!
I think I might suggest this to her kindergarten teacher next year.

I don’t understand all these kids with social networking and all this media hype.

As a former teacher and a daughter of two parents who were teachers for 34 years each I just want to say that the TEACHERS have NO say so in what parties the schools have! So this should really be addressed to the ADMINISTRATION! Besides if you have more than one kid in elementary or if you like me and you have one in elementary and another in middle school you go to the DOLLAR store to but valentines! My kids were happy with that!
Heather B says
Didn’t mean for that to sound rude, I just get up in arms when teachers get attacked for things they have no control over!!!

I’m left with just one in elementary school. I’m so grateful for middle school, when the false hoopla stops. Here’s hoping the elementary school teachers unite as one next year and skip the whole thing.

As one of the only teachers at my school not having a party, I have to tell you that parents are asking to bring in treats, fruit platters etc. Some parents are almost upset that we are not having a party. We are still doing the cards. I really can’t imagine not doing the cards. But we send home a note saying that doing the cards is a choice and if you choose to do the cards, please do it for every member of the class.
You seem really down on teachers and the truth is that makes me sad.

I can empathize completely – sometimes it seems like the parents are doing all the work. So, I was happy to see my kindergartener’s teacher sending a note (yeah the no note thing is kinda far fetched, I feel for you!) to say that they would *not* be distributing valentines this year and instead they had assigned a secret valentine to each child, complete with paper heart to draw on. Guess what, though? Parents STILL sent in some of the Disney garbage with lollipops!!!
